About Rachel
Rachel is a Sydney based mixed media artist and freelance graphic designer.
‘I find it fascinating that colour in the landscape doesn’t require much more than ingenuity and it can inspire and uplift. This is what I aim for in my work.
Influences come from:
The capital of Albania, Tirana, is governed by mayor and artist, Edi Rama. With minimal financial resources to improve the city after communist rule he facilitated the painting of Tirana’s drab buildings in brilliant colours. This incredible creative idea has enlivened the cityscape and encouraged the people to be proud of the appearance of their city.
The attractive colour of red painted barns common in North America, Sweden and Norway is the result of farmers protecting their weatherboards with a mixture of linseed oil from their flax crop, casein from the milk of their cows and red oxide from their soil.’
Her latest work is a series of encaustic (wax) paintings and digital montages with a distinct storybook feel. Rachel is inspired by architectural drawings, the textures of weathered buildings and rusted roofs, colonial Australian buildings, barns and European street scenes.
Rachel’s paintings are created by etching into the surface of the wax and applying layers of oil paint. She uses symbols such as lamps and birds, doorways and windows to create a narrative and explores colour and the texture of the wax to instill her artworks with mood and atmosphere.
Her prints are hyperreal digital photographic compositions of quintessential Australian buildings and landscapes. These towns, painted or printed, exist nowhere tangible and have been pieced together from memories and photographs of places around the world.
Rachel studied Fine Art at The College of Fine Arts in Sydney and also works as a Graphic Designer. Her artwork is held in private collections in Australia and America.
